Punk Food Thoughts at The Midway Cafe

MassBytes pulled aside members of The Old Edison, The Cretins, OC45, and 40oz of Spite to ask them random food questions.

Watch this:

The Old Edison

About:
The Old Edison was the original power plant in the working-class town of South Boston, adapted by Will, Rory, Jima, and Liam, kids who grew up in its shadow; four strong blooded Irish who grew up blue collar grasping at any chance they could get their filthy hands on. Their youth was characterized by hard times where they found solace, friends, and unity in the punk rock scene. All playing their part in different bands throughout the years, soon they found themselves living under the same roof and realizing their common interest in the songs and sounds of yesteryear. They came together with the common goal of bringing honesty and heart back to the forefront. With constant change a part of life, after Jima left the band to pursue schooling, They added both Catherine, a well accomplished fiddle and whistle player with accolades of many twice her age, and Squall, a well established local solo act as well as strong bass player.

The music is stripped down and raw, letting the soul shine true. Influenced by roots, folk, and country music; they tried to combine this sound with the spirit of the music they grew up with. The songs are heartfelt and straight forward, sung of hope, loss, anger, belief, love, insanity, and triumph. Each with the quality of being sung along to with friends. In these times of dishonesty and fear, the band finds their strength in the music and hopes you can to; the only way to make it through is with the help of those around you.

Grab a beer, raise your voice, and enjoy!

The Cretins

About:
Assembled 1995 to combat the spread of lame music, The Cretins were very much a part of the pop punk revolution that infected the 1990's. The Boston-based band developed their own sound early on but always manage to stay true to some of the best parts of the genre exemplified by bands like Green Day, The Descendants and Screeching Weasel. During that time Murf, AJ and the boys grew their fan base by opening for bands such as The Queers, MTX and the Groovie Ghoulies. Murf even filled in as the second guitarist for The Queers for a bit.

In the fall of '96, the band released their first CD, "I Feel Better Already," on the now defunct Melted Records and followed it up with several U.S. tours. Their sophomore CD, "We're Gonna Get So Laid," also on Melted, was released in the spring of '98. Several more U.S. tours would follow but the band would call it quits sometime in the year 2000.

Now, after almost a ten year hiatus, the boys are back with a new CD on Insubordination Records entitled "More Stoopider." One listen and you'll understand that a little growing up can be a good thing.

OC45

About:

Abridged Band History: Derek gets kicked out of a party at Dave's house in fall of '07. Derek hauls full beer cans at said house. Derek meets Anthony in spring of '08 and they talk about a band because they both like Leftover Crack. Naturally, nothing comes of it. Derek and Dave actually meet through mutual friends and bond over Streetlight Manifesto and Rancid. Adam pukes in Dave's livingroom sometime in the spring of '07. Adam ends up moving in with Dave, fall '09. Dave introduces Adam to Derek because of uncanny musical similarity (ie. the Suicide Machines). Derek and Adam start jamming and writing songs acoustically. Spring of '10, Adam gets a gig for his old band that no longer exists. Adam asks Derek and Dave to form a band. Derek calls Anthony to bang on the drums... Since the original lineup, Dave has moved onto some sort of hardcore band or something, Anthony switched to bass, and Derek's longtime neighbor, Nick Tanzi, hopped in on drums.

Fast Forward to August 2010, following a raucous show at Harper's Ferry w/ the Welch Boys, OC45 went on temporary hiatus because Derek's a jackass and went to Santiago, Chile to teach English. The band has been writing and collaborating on tons of new material and plans to destroy everything in their path during the summer of 2011 and beyond.

... And we're back! Unfortunately, Anthony's commitment to grad school interfered with his participation in OC45 (apparently, earning your doctorate requires a lot of time and energy), but we managed to kidnap Kory Boutin from a local elementary school and took him under our wing as our drummer and protege. Upon Kory's abduction, errr I mean arrival, Tanzi stepped out from behind the kit, bought a fedora, and learned how to play the bass. Now, thanks to some long-awaited lineup stability, a "treasure trove" of new material, and some really fortunate homecourt bounces, OC45 is poised to record it's debut album and rip apart a venue near you. Buckle up. We might not make history, but we're definitely gonna fuck some shit up.

40oz of Spite

About:

Rob and Dirty Dave were in 7 Letter Alphabet together. They toured all over the USA and put out a couple records. 7LA broke up.. Dave went to jail, got out, and started The Beat-Ups. Line up changes haunted The Beat-Ups through out the whole run of the band. In 2006 Tommy Gun (from The Hubies/Nuke and the Living Dead) moved to Grand Rapids and ended up joining the Beat-Ups on bass and back vocals. In 2009 the band split up due to their drummer getting a teaching job in Africa. Fed up with constant line up changes they hung up the Beat-Ups and took some time off.

In March of 2010 Dave and Tommy decided they wanted to form something new where they would combine both of their vocal and writing styles together. Dave asked Rob (who was playing in Guns, Drugs, and Vibrators at the time) to hop in on drums. And that was it. 40oz of Spite was born. Taking all the elements of all their previous bands.. combining them together, and amping it up. Straight forward, no holds bar, high energy, in your face punk fucking rock.

July of 2010 they released the "Drink It Down EP" which consisted of their first 5 songs. They played steadily through out the year developing their songs and traveling around the state of Michigan.

April of 2011 they embarked on a Midwest/East Coast tour with The Hex Bombs with the release of "You'll Never Make The Team. Cause You're Fat" a live EP recorded just for this tour.

Feb-April of 2012 they went into Copper Coin Studios with Joe Sullivan and recorded their debut full length, "The Life We Live" and quickly did another Midwest/East Coast tour in support of it in early May.

Since then they have been hitting the road hard bringing their straight forward no holds bar punk rock to cities and towns all over the the place sharing the stage with acts like, D.R.I., Kevin Seconds (7SECONDS), The Meatmen, Hellmouth, Koffin Kats, The Vibrators, Michale Graves (MISFITS), and plenty other touring bands!
