My Taste of Allston Day (by Sarah Sparks)

I woke up early, and I am NOT a morning person, to volunteer at the 15TH Annual Taste of Allston at Harvard University Murr Center, 65 North Harvard Street, Allston, MA on Saturday, June 9, 2012. The event was presented by Allston Village Main Streets, New Balance, Samuel Adams, Harvard University, The Hamilton Company, Stingray Body Art, Houghton Chemical, Dreaming Code, Bank of America, and The Weekly Dig. Man, I am so happy I rolled out of bed for this event. My belly was FULL by the end.

"Enjoy innovative flavors from around the world, all conveniently available - think globally, eat locally! - in one dynamic international neighborhood, Allston...everything from pho to faux, fish to Phish, salons to cilantro, and henna tattoos to cockatoos." Yes. Please.

The day was beautiful. Sunny and warm. The event was packed and the food was plentiful. Hot dogs, ribs, falafel balls, pizza, vegan ice cream, beer, pasta, sliders, noodles, wings, etc, etc.

Admissions to this event was $20 (Children 10 and under get in free). It was worth it. With over 30 vendors bringing in their culinary treats, live music from The Allstonians and a beautiful day with perfect weather, I did not go home unsatisfied.

Allston Village Main Street outdone themselves. I can only expect next year to be bigger and better.

 Allston Village Main Streets

A little bit about AVMS...

Founded in 1996, Allston Village Main Streets (AVMS) is part of the country's first city-wide, multi-district Main Street revitalization program, a non-profit, public-private partnership between the City of Boston, the National Main Street Center and neighborhood stakeholders. The program relies on volunteer community involvement with staff support.

AVMS's Mission:

  • To help make Allston Village a thriving, safe, friendly business district which provides diverse cultural offerings and a variety of businesses which both serve and employ residents.
  • To promote Allston Village, so that people will want to live in Allston and shoppers will come from other areas to enjoy its vibrant arts, retail and entertainment offerings.
  • To make Allston Village cleaner, greener, more pedestrian-orientated, and free of trash and graffiti.
  • To improve the storefronts of Allston Village with better signage and fewer roll-down grates.
  • To help foster cooperation among residents, businesses and landlords to build a healthy, economically vital Allston Village.
  • To work together through Allston Village Main Streets, helping the community make Allston a great place to live, work and socialize, embodying the slogan "It's all in Allston."
In short we work to make Allston Village a better place to LIVE, WORK, DINE, AND SHOP!
