On Tuesday September 18th, come take a cultural crawl with us through the East Somerville restaurant corridor and discover Somerville’s best kept culinary secrets. The authentic foods will take you straight to the sights and smells of Ethiopia, the tastes of El Salvador and the colors of Haiti. Last year, over one thousand people came and ate their way through this showcase of ethnic cuisine. This September over a dozen restaurants, representing five continents, will once again throw open their doors to a horde of foodies. Join us on this cavalcade of taste and culture!

WHAT IS MAIN STREETS?
 
East Somerville Main Streets is a non-profit organization dedicated to rebuilding the East Broadway Business District as the heart of the East Somerville community and as a vibrant destination.  This is accomplished through volunteer-driven events and initiatives which play off of the unique characteristics of the neighborhood in order to further develop that character.

The National Main Streets Model:
East Somerville Main Streets follows a proven model. Founded in 1977 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Main Streets “Four-Point Approach” is a community-driven, comprehensive methodology used to revitalize traditional business districts in communities like East Somerville. Based on the work of community-led committees, it advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts based on their unique assets.

Leadership:
East Somerville Main Streets is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors formed of interested citizens. Its daily operations are carried out by a full-time director.

Activity:
Most of East Somerville Main Streets’ events, activities, and dynamic nature come from its member led committees: Design, Promotion, Economic Support & Development, and Organization. Committees are always open to new members.


MISSION & GOALS

Our Mission
The mission of East Somerville Main Streets is to help build East Somerville as a thriving, safe, friendly neighborhood and commercial district that welcomes cultural diversity and offers a variety of businesses, which both serve and employ residents. East Somerville Main Streets works in collaboration with business owners, residents, agencies, and neighborhood groups to make East Somerville a great place to live, work and socialize.

ESMS Goals
  • Build East Somerville as a thriving, safe, friendly neighborhood and commercial district: welcome cultural diversity and foster a variety of businesses.
  • Support existing businesses: create an increasingly stable and diverse local economy which serves and employs residents.
  • Create a cleaner, greener, pedestrian-friendly East Somerville: reflect community pride and character, and add to individual well-being.
  • Strengthen East Somerville storefronts: create a more inviting, customer-friendly atmosphere by improving signs and lighting and removing external grates.
  • Increase collaboration and connection between residents: expand opportunities and physical spaces for community gathering.
  • Promote East Somerville: encourage neighbors to support and celebrate the local economy; draw visitors and shoppers.

COMMITTEES

The ESMS committees are the organization’s idea generators and work force. They bring together community members to tackle long- and short-term projects important to East Somerville. Committees are always open to new members and to volunteers who want to help with specific projects.

Design Committee
The visible face of our business district provides the welcome for the diverse resources that it holds. The design committee works to create an inviting commercial district that encourages customers and residents to spend time in East Somerville. The committee’s goals include:
  • improving public spaces
  • increasing presence of art and urban greenery
  • preserving historic buildings
  • promoting storefront improvements
  • creating design guidelines
Promotion Committee
The promotion committee works to reinforce East Somerville’s dynamic nature and positive image to residents, visitors and the community-at-large. Committee activities have included Under the Stars: International Movie Nights, neighborhood networking events at local restaurants and the Colors of the Americas : East Somerville Art Walk. The committee’s goals include:
  • identifying and promoting East Somerville’s unique assets
  • planning special events
  • producing informational materials
  • working collaboratively with businesses on retail promotions
Economic Support & Development Committee
ESMS recognizes that businesses are the heart and soul of East Somerville’s commercial districts. The Economic Support & Development (ES&D) Committee is committed to seeing these businesses, and the business district, grow and succeed. The committee’s goals include:
  • linking businesses to existing business development resources (in financing, marketing, business planning, etc.)
  • hosting workshops/events for business owners
  • researching and understanding local market dynamics
  • developing a business retention plan
  • creating expansion and recruitment strategies
Organization Committee
Creating added vibrancy in a commercial and community center is a broad task that requires the thoughts, collaboration and contributions of many groups and individuals. The Organization Committee is committed to bringing all resources and interested stakeholders to the table. The committee’s goals include:
  • building a united East Somerville, bringing together stakeholders from across the district and city
  • guiding fundraising and ESMS finances
  • recruiting volunteers
