Wine of the Week with John Syfor

2011 Casa Castillo Monastrell

My apologies to all readers, as I intended to get this out yesterday; however, work got in the way of that. This week's "Wine of the Week" is a rich, spicy gem from Spain and would be a serious contender for my "house red". That means with a price of around $12, I would keep this around to open any night of the week with dinner or just for fun.
Grown in Spain's southeastern town of Jumilla, this wine is made from the Monastrell grape, which is also known as Mourvedre in France. Offering up aromas of dark berries, smoked meat and violets. In the mouth it is full bodied with flavors of dark fruit,  anise spice and a hint of dark chocolate.
The big fruit flavors and spiciness of the wine make it a great match for grilled pork or beef, but it is especially good with barbecue
