Food on the Road - Tour Day 7 Asheville, NC to Fayetteville, NC

Woke up today luxuriating in having been able to sleep in a real bed in a private room. After lingering there for a little while, trying to gather motivation to rise, my stomach began to grumble about its emptiness. Never one to ignore that, I got my feet on the floor, geared up and poked my head out the front door of the house to check the weather. 54 degrees and sunny! Perfect for a short walk to the music store and trusting to my luck to find a local diner for some good food.

My luck held as it often does, and I stumbled across the Happy Hill Restaurant. Today's specials are country fried steak and hamburger steak. I went for the hamburger steak with gravy and sauteed onions, 2 homemade biscuits, and sides of mashed potatoes with gravy, and one of my favorites - fried okra. it's difficult to find okra back home, so it's always a special treat to get some.

Nothing better than homemade chicken soup when you're sick
After hitting the music store and the diner, it was about time for us to make the journey from Asheville to Fayetteville, NC, where are show this night was. We have been lucky enough to play in Fayetteville several times in the past several months, so we've made some great friends. We knew that we were looking forward to staying with these friends and we were told that they were making incredible bacon-filled after show snacks for us, as well as some homemade chicken soup especially for our bass player who had been nursing a cold for several days.

The stew was ready when we got there a few of us chowed on some of it while the rest of the crew got to work on the aftershow treats! I have to see how much I can remember now of the treats - it was a veritable drunken whirlwind after 3 sets and things are a little blurry. Thank goodness I had the sense to take some photos!

There were two main parts to our snackies. The first was the sausage and cheese balls. Hand mixed with spices, the sausage was then formed into balls and popped into the oven until crispy as hell!

Love handmade food!

Making the balls

The finished product, so delicious that I had burns on the
inside of my mouth for 3 days because I couldn't stop
eating them even though they were still too hot.

At the same time that the balls were baking, another of our lovely hostesses was preparing an extremely tasty concoction that involved sour cream and wonderfully hand crumbled bacon.

I want to describe these goodies in way more detail, but there was another factor to the night ----- drunx0r!
